Style Guide

A Style Guide is a set of guidelines, rules and specifications that must be adhered to when reproducing a logo from this site.

Acrobat

Acrobat is a application used to exhange files between different platforms and programs. i.e. Mac Quark file can be viewed by PC. For the exchange of files to work every computer requires Acrobat Reader - a free download from Adobe. All style guides on the Logo Bank site are sent to users as Acrobat files.

EPS

Encapsulated Postscript File (EPS). A file format commonly used to export Vector based graphic images from their native applications (Illustrator, Freehand, Corel Draw etc) to other layout applications (Quark, Pagemaker, Publisher etc). EPS files can also be a rasta based image.

TIFF

Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Preferred export format for exchanging files between Macs and PCs. Images are only rasta based.

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is the file format commonly used for images used on HTML pages over the World Wide Web. GIF is a compressed format that is designed to minimise file transfer time over phone lines.

JPEG

Joint Photographics Experts Group (JPEG) is the file format commonly used for images used on HTML pages over the World Wide Web. Unlike the GIF format, a JPEG format retains all the colour information in an RGB image.

BMP

Standard Windows bitmap image for DOS and Windows-compatible computers. BMP is rasta based.

Rasta

A rasta image is pixel based i.e. photographs / continuous-tone images. A Pixel is a unit of colour, photographs are made up of many pixels. When an image is digitally scanned the resolution or sharpness of that image is determined by the number of pixels contained in a Centimetre or Inch square. The file size of a rasta based image is determined by the resolution i.e. the higher the resolution, the higher the file size. Once an image is scanned or converted to pixels it is not possible to enlarge the image without the loss of quality (the pixels get bigger and the image becomes rough looking or commonly termed pixelated). File formats that are rasta based include: TIFF, GIF, JPEG, BMP, EPS.

Vector

A vector image is made up of lines and curves using mathematical objects. When a Vector based image is enlarged or reduced the lines and curves are mathmatically re proportioned and illustrated. This is the preferred format for any type and drawing based images requiring crisp, clear lines regardless of the size they are scaled to. i.e. Logos. File formats that are Vector based include: EPS, WMF, CGM, HPGL,

WMF

Windows Meta File, a vector based graphic file. Commonly used on PC for exhange of files between applications. Particulary handy for logos because of the small file size and image quality.

PDF

Portable File Document (PDF). Created from a program called Acrobat, the file can be viewed on any platform i.e. Mac, PC etc as long as acrobat reader is resident on the computer. Acrobat Reader is free from the Adobe site. All style guides on the Logo Bank site are sent to users as PDF files.
